Thermal spray lead times are one of the many variables that can surprise buyers. However, the majority of variables are within your control and can be influenced to produce the results you require.
Part Complexity and Masking
For more complex geometries, time has to be allowed for preparation to spray blind holes, fine threads etc. As with all work supplied with a drawing, it is very helpful if a copy of the masking required is supplied with the drawing, thus saving time and possible rework.
Material and Feedstock Availability
Most standard materials (mild steel wire, aluminium bronze, etc) are held in stock. Some of the specialist alloys and even more so the various ceramic powders can take several weeks to get hold of. Enquiring about the availability of your required material feedstock at the same time as your initial enquiry will get you a far better answer than if you were to enquire after ordering. Thermal spray processes are generally classified into the various types by reference to the heat source and the form of the feedstock (see how thermal spraying processes are classified).
Batch Size and Queue Position
Smaller one-off items generally take longer to process than batches of 20, due to their inefficient use of spray time and masking up. If you are in a rush to receive your items, we can try to combine your item with a larger batch of similar items. Alternatively, there may be a minimum batch charge to process your items.
Post-Spray Machining or Grinding
By way of example, most coatings are applied in a slightly proud condition and then ground back to size, which can be a separate operation and even carried out off-site by Poeton. A useful reference for Thermal Spray Coating is poeton.co.uk/surface-treatments/thermal-metal-sprays/.
Drawing Completeness at Enquiry
Jobs with incomplete drawings are held in a ‘holding’ queue and the information required is sought by the applicator. Drawing complete with all relevant information allows you to get the job into the schedule more quickly.
Get your documentation in order before enquiring and you will be surprised how quickly an order can be delivered.
