Laminate is known for its realistic wood-look designs

Laminate flooring is made from compressed fibreboard. It’s known for its realistic wood-look designs, affordability and ease of installation, usually through a click-lock system. Laminate is generally hard-wearing, but its main drawback is moisture. Standard laminate can swell or warp if water seeps into the joints, making it less suitable for bathrooms. It’s potentially risky in kitchens unless you buy a specially designed water-resistant type. There are many different vacuums suitable for laminate flooring too, including the Dyson V15 Detect.

This gives it excellent moisture resistance. It’s available either as flexible tiles and planks or as rigid-core click systems. LVT is warmer underfoot, quieter, and can mimic wood, stone or ceramic with impressive realism. Because it’s waterproof, LVT is a good choice for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways. It also tends to cope well with everyday wear, making it ideal for busy households.

What’s the best option for me?

When comparing the two, laminate is typically cheaper, easier to install yourself and offers a more rigid, solid feel. You can opt for 12mm laminate flooring from www.irwintiles.ie/wooden-flooring/laminate-flooring/laminate-12mm-water-resistant, which will freshen up your living area.

What should I choose?

Choose laminate for cost-effective style in living rooms and bedrooms, and opt for LVT if you want a durable, waterproof option for the family home.
