Four types of copper pipes and their uses

Paul Faillace February 11, 2025 Reviews Leave a Comment

Copper pipes are a vital component of plumbing systems, valued for their durability, reliability, and versatility. Available in various types, each is designed for specific applications based on factors such as thickness, flexibility, and pressure tolerance. Let’s look at four types and their uses.

Table of Contents

  • 1. DWV
  • 2. Type K
  • 3. Type L
  • 4. Type M

1. DWV

DWV, which stands for drain, waste, and vent, is designed specifically for use in drainage and waste systems. These pipes have thinner walls than other types and are unsuitable for water distribution.

These pipes are primarily used in waste management systems to handle waste and venting in plumbing setups. Additionally, DWV copper pipes are employed in vent systems, helping to prevent sewer gases from entering buildings.

2. Type K

Type K copper pipe is the thickest and most robust of the standard copper pipes. It is ideal for high-pressure applications due to its durable construction. This pipe is commonly used for underground installations due to its ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions.

Additionally, Type K copper pipes are used in HVAC systems, ensuring heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems operate with strength and stability. This type of copper pipe is also useful in industrial applications, with water and oil transported in various industrial settings.

3. Type L

Type L is thinner than type K but still offers a solid balance of durability and cost-effectiveness. This type of copper pipe is widely used in both residential and commercial plumbing applications. It is available in flexible and rigid forms, offering versatility.

These pipes are commonly used for indoor plumbing, such as water supply systems in homes and buildings. It is also suitable for fire safety systems, including fire sprinkler systems.

4. Type M

Type M is the thinnest and most affordable copper pipe available. It is typically used for low-pressure residential water supply lines. This pipe is only available in rigid form, making it an ideal choice for applications in which flexibility is not necessary.

Type M copper pipes are commonly used for interior water lines in homes, providing an economical solution for residential plumbing.
