Identifying a great school culture

Paul Faillace April 13, 2024 Reviews Leave a Comment

School culture is a set of values and beliefs, norms and practices that influence the way in which a school functions and the learning and wellbeing of both students and staff. A positive school culture is one that fosters a collaborative and supportive environment in which everyone feels respected and valued. How can you tell if a school has a positive culture? Here are a few signs to look out for.

Shared vision and mission

A great school culture is characterised by a vision and mission which are clear and compelling and guide the actions and decisions of the community. The school’s vision and mission should reflect the interests and needs of students and teachers. The school’s vision and mission is communicated regularly and reinforced through different channels such as meetings, newsletters, posters and events.

Collaborative leadership

A great school culture is characterised by a collaborative style of leadership that engages staff, students and parents in the process of school improvement. The leadership team is responsive, accessible and supportive to feedback from stakeholders. The leadership team distributes roles and responsibility among staff and offers them opportunities for growth and professional development. The leadership team cultivates a culture of accountability, trust and recognition for the staff. A school should sell this in their prospectus and website. High expectations and support

Great school cultures have high expectations for students and staff and provide support to them in their academic and personal achievements. Staff set high but realistic goals for students and offer differentiated instruction, resources, and feedback to meet their needs and interests. Staff also monitors and tracks the progress and results of students and intervenes when necessary. Staff also set high standards for themselves and strive to improve.

Innovative and creative practices

Innovative and creative practices are a hallmark of a great school culture. They enhance the quality and relevance in teaching and learning. Staff use data-driven and evidence-based strategies to plan, execute, and evaluate instruction and assessment. Staff also incorporate technology, art, and cross-curricular links to enrich learning experiences and outcomes for students. Staff also promote and encourage the students’ creativity, curiosity, and critical-thinking skills.

Positive climate

A positive school climate is conducive to both learning and wellbeing. The school is clean, safe and well-organised, with adequate resources and facilities. The school has a fair and consistent discipline policy which promotes positive behaviour and prevents violence and bullying. The school offers a wide range of extracurricular programmes, clubs and activities that are tailored to the needs and interests of students and teachers. The school has a joyful and fun atmosphere that motivates and inspires the entire school community.
