How to recycle your mobile phone

Paul Faillace September 18, 2024 Technology Leave a Comment

People upgrade their mobile phones more frequently than ever before and they often wonder what to do with the old devices. Recycling your mobile phone is the environmentally conscious thing to do but it can also be financially rewarding.

Check if Your Phone Can Be Reused

Before you recycle, check whether your old phone could still be useful to someone else. If it’s in good working order, you may be able to sell it or give it to a friend or family member. Some charities also accept donated phones.

Remove Your Personal Data

Before you recycle your phone, you need to remove all your personal data. Back up any important information you want to keep and then carry out a factory reset to erase all the data from the phone.

Don’t forget to remove the SIM card, multi network SIM card and any external storage cards. If you need a multi network SIM card, UK firms and manufacturers can help.

Find a Recycling Programme

It is estimated that there are around 1 billion pounds worth of old and unused electrical items in the UK that could be recycled. There are several ways to recycle your mobile phone in the UK. Many phone manufacturers have their own recycling schemes and they often provide prepaid envelopes or collection points where you can drop off your old phone.

Local Council Recycling Centres

Local council recycling centres also offer recycling areas for old phones and electronics. Check the website of your local council for information on their e-waste recycling facilities and opening times.

Consider the Environmental Impact

It is also important to consider the environmental impact of recycling your phone. Try to choose a recycler that is WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) compliant as they make sure that any harmful substances are disposed of safely and as much of the phone is recycled as possible.

Get Your Phone Ready for Recycling

Make sure your phone is ready for recycling by removing the case or screen protectors as they may need to be recycled separately.
